Back during the Carter administration, 1977 to 1981 , there was a little thing known as the “Misery Index.” This is a scale based on adding the unemployment rate to the inflation rate. President Carter helped to inflate the Misery Index by increasing deficit spending and then increasing the money supply to cover those deficits. With just those two “great” policies by Carter, inflation rose to 10 percent a year.
Bernanke and Obama Foresee a Brighter FutureApparently the words of Federal Reserve Chairman Ben Bernanke carry a little more weight with Wall Street these days than those of the Commander in Chief. Bernanke gave his reassuring prognosis to Congress last month that the recession could end before the close of 2009, and Wall Street reacted with a steadier day.
